Mylo Kaye Dreamr March 2017

In March, Dreamr CEO Mylo Kaye visited San Francisco on the very first flight from Manchester. The visit saw him visit tech giants, Salesforce and LinkedIn. We find out what the trip has achieved and why it’s beneficial to fly direct from Manchester. What do you think the trip has achieved? What do you think the trip has achieved? Connecting Manchester to San Francisco will open up greater opportunities for our region and help stimulate the North through talent, investment and knowledge transfer. Tech giants of Silicon Valley will now see how serious Manchester is in opening up the north of England and we’re poised to take advantage of this direct route to greater diversify our region’s digital economy. How do you think Silicon Valley views the North of England tech scene? Has the trip made a difference? I have met with some of San Francisco’s top companies, including GCA Altium, Twilio and GP Bullhound who view the North of England as a tech leader that demonstrates the strength and depth of tech from the UK. San Francisco and Manchester have long had a connection with tech and this direct route from Manchester airport is our way of showing that the

Immersing myself in virtual / augmented reality in South Korea

Mylo Kaye Dreamr South Korea

As I sat back on my fight home and relax with a glass of wine, I have no short than 11 hours to reflect on my past seven days in South Korea. My mission and objective to visit South Korea were to explore the world of tech, virtual reality and augmented reality, and I’ve done just that. I had the great pleasure of visiting a fantastic co-working space in Gangnam; the super-high-tech building was created by Hyundai, the motor car company and aimed at start-ups, which if you’re a start-up in South Korea is probably centred around tech. The building was the epitome of what a co-working space should be. Open bright spaces in communal areas where you can share experiences with lunch, yoga room and massage chairs on every floor for when you’re feeling stressed, creating a start-up is usually stressful, right? What’s unique in this co-working space is the multitude of spaces that are used for more specific work, a testing lab for testing apps on every phone going, 3D printing studio and photography studio. All these facilities are available to the residents at no extra charge. Humbled to attend the ROK-UK Creative Industries Forum 2017 I had

Living my childhood dream (In California)

I have spent my entire life being inspired by the tech companies of the American west coast. The companies that power the world tech include non-other than Apple Microsoft, Airbnb and Google. The companies that power the tech we use every day are what inspire and what Dreamr is built upon, we build apps for Google and Apple platform. So when I was invited to join Tech North and the UKTI on a trade mission to California, all my dreams came true. 14 hours and two flights later I arrive at San Francisco international airport at around 10 pm. Ordering my Uber from the arrivals lounge I was at my apartment within 30 minutes, a quaint home in the heart of Oakland where I would spend the next three weeks. The purpose of the trip, along with other Manchester businesses was to promote our tech scene and to create relationships to enable us Manchester based companies to expand to the states. Arriving a few days before the Dreamforce conference and having time to meet with the UKTI San Fransisco team, I was able to gain huge insight from the multiple speakers at UKTI headquarters. Learning the cost of employment and tax

30 Lessons I’ve learnt before I’m 30

In just two weeks I become the ripe old age of 30. Birthdays at the Dreamr office become known a few days before, then we have celebrations with the team. This birthday for me started around eight months ago when I was kindly reminded in passing; ‘oh you’re thirty soon’. It wasn’t all bad; I was being asked to ‘try’ thirty things I’ve not done, before my 30th birthday. While I initially enjoyed the idea of jumping out of a plane, eating tuna, and other ideas I decided it may not be realistic. So, it was agreed I list the thirty most valuable lessons I’ve learnt throughout my life. I thought this was going to be quite difficult, albeit it was easier than finding thirty things I’ve not tried. 1) Don’t tell anyone your age. (Only if you don’t like surprises) 2) A roof over your head is all you need to be happy (My Mum) 3) Trust everyone (At least once) 4) Realise you can’t always be good at everything 5) Money can’t buy happiness (But it can open up opportunities) 6) Everyone has the right to an opinion (Even if you don’t like it) 7) Follow your heart

Me and my team shortlisted for three awards

Awards ceremonies are fantastic; you get to see real tangible results from agencies that have ‘made’ websites or apps for brands. But what about how you get to that physical product? There is always a journey to get to that point and usually, that journey never receives any credit. The Skills for Business Awards recognises the outstanding contribution that skills and learning have on a business. At Dreamr, we invest a lot of time in skills and learning, from our Wednesday afternoons of learning new skills to the conferences and seminars our team attends month after month. I was delighted to hear that Dreamr has been shortlisted for no less than three awards at this year’s Skills for Business Awards. Lynne, our Head of Aspiration, was shortlisted for Learning & Skills Champion, Dreamr as a company shortlisted for Creative, Media & Digital Technology and myself for Entrepreneur Award. I’m over the moon that Dreamr is being recognised for the outstanding work we do on a daily basis with developing the skills of our super-talented development and design team. The hard work Jack, Lynne and the rest of our team put it every day is apparent by being shortlisted for these

Corner  –  World first digital boxing trainer - Mylo Kaye

Corner is the first complete boxing performance tracker. It comprises a complete Internet of Things (IoT) solution which uses unobtrusive wrist-worn sensors, fitting underneath the boxing gloves. Dreamr’s app design and development team worked closely with clients Athletec through each stage of this innovative and cutting-edge project. Historically, in order to understand the quality of their performance, combat athletes have had no alternative but to rely on expensive video playback, with many cameras required to provide an adequate assessment. The high cost and setup requirements have meant that this technology has been far out-of-reach for the vast majority of gyms and athletes. Coach driven assessment to remember accurately every detail of a session is both unrealistic and ultimately imprecise. The English Institute of Sport reports coaches and athletes only recall 30% of performance correctly. In the sporting world where even tiny incremental nuances in performance can mean the difference between winning and losing, Corner has been designed to revolutionise this process. An onboard microprocessor determines key statistics from every punch thrown by a boxer, whether it be jab or a strong right hook, and delivers the feedback via Bluetooth to a smartphone app for both display and storage over time.

Why I fired my boss

Five years ago I was working a regular job. It was partially enjoyable, I mean I didn’t not like it; otherwise, I wouldn’t have been there. I enjoyed the people, the environment was okay, and the pay meant I could enjoy things a little more than without a job. There came a time when I realised that it wasn’t for me, and I don’t mean that particular job. I mean working for someone, with some people. I didn’t fire the boss I used to work for; I fired every boss that I would ever work for. Let me explain. I have a such an active brain, when I was a kid I used to say to my Mum, ‘What can I do today?, ‘Mum, I’m bored’. And a whole other bunch of moaning that meant I was pretty mentally unfulfilled. Fast forward a few years, or two I found myself in my old job becoming tired, not only with University but also my job at the time. I would spend countless hours cracking jokes, surfing the net, and trying to keep my brain from drying up. (Or going insane). There was not one day where I decided let’s start a
