Mental health is something that should definitely be taken seriously. We all should look after our mental health but some of us will suffer from poor mental health. You will find that mental health is an umbrella term for many different conditions however mental health is something we all have, it is whether we are suffering from poor mental health or mental health issues that should be recognised.

All too often, the topic of mental health gets pushed away and people don’t want to discuss it. However, in a day and age when the topic couldn’t be any more prevalent or important, especially given the events of recent months, it is so important that we do actually discuss this and recognise different things about it.

It is absolutely vital to be aware of the different facets of mental health conditions – not only so we can recognise the signs in ourselves but in others too. There can be a variety of signs to look out for such as poor concentration, irritability, a lack of interest in day to day activities and a low mood but there are many other signs too. However, there are ways that we can look after our own mental health and help others too. Here’s how:

Look Out For The Signs

As mentioned above, there can be many different signs that we or someone we know are suffering from poor mental health. Being aware of these changes to a person’s mood or personality can enable us to seek help quickly and halt the conditions from progressing further.

Talk About Your Feelings

It is so important to talk about your feelings and not bottle them up until you feel like you are about to explode. A trusted friend or family member can be a great first step to talking about what the problems are and how you want to change the situation. Sometimes you may not even know yet what the problem is or how to change it but just need someone to listen to you talk. Make sure you do this if you need to.

You may want to talk to a friend or a family member but you may feel like you will benefit more from talking to a trained professional. You have to do what is right for you at that particular time. Only you can work out what you want or need, people can only help get you to the answer.

Ask For Help

There are trained professionals out there who are qualified to help in these situations. Mylo Kaye, a trainee counsellor, is one of these people. It can be scary to ask for help but these professionals are non-judgemental and a wonderful sounding board. They will help you reach self-realisation and a level of self-empowerment you thought impossible by working with you to discover exactly what steps you need to take to rectify the situation.

Take A Break

If you are feeling overwhelmed, a break can be perfect for your mental health. Stop adding to your daily stressors by continuing on in the same vain – take a break and reintroduce stuff slowly to see if you can work out exactly what is triggering your condition.

Keep In Touch

A great way to look after yours and others mental health is to keep in touch. Check-in with friends and family regularly. You may be feeling great but someone you know may be struggling and that phone call or knock on the door could mean the world to them. Likewise, calling a friend and hearing their voice could be exactly what you need to fight another day.

By taking the steps to look after your mental health and that of others, you will find that you will almost certainly become self-empowered. Taking responsibility for the things that happen in your life and how to deal with them can have a wonderfully positive impact on your mental health. There is a reason why many counsellors and therapists such as Mylo Kaye tend to go by the client-centred approach – listening to their clients and not judging them, guiding them to find the answers for themselves is a great way to help the client reach self-realisation and become empowered by the knowledge they now hold about themselves. By knowing what to do and how to do it, you can then take responsibility for each avenue of your life.
